We get married for all kinds of reasons, but why do we stay married? For many couples, this becomes the question that either drives them together or drives them apart. Just like our lives, our marriages need an overriding purpose bigger than our day to day struggles, our personality differences, and the world around us.
Does your marriage look like a well-trained team of horses ?
Or does it resemble two five year olds fighting in a three-legged race?
Great marriages have a great driver and BOTH head horses yield to his command. So how do we get the driver back in the seat?
- Establish the Destination. Jeremiah 29:11 tells us the Lord has a plan for us and it’s a good plan. Pray together and ask the Lord about his plan, his purpose for your marriage. Understanding God’s calling for you (as a couple) emboldens you to do great things. Then embrace the strengths of your team and CHARGE ON!
- Pack Carefully. Examine your own life first. There are likely things that don’t belong on this journey; habits, attitudes, bitterness and old hurts. Genesis 4:7 tells us “sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.” Surrender your excess baggage to the Holy Spirit – you don’t need to lug it along.
- Stay the Course. Romans 8:37 says “In all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.” Understand your journey will not be without breakdowns, detours, pitfalls, wrong turns, distractions – anything to keep you from the journey God has planned for you. You are a team, the load is heavy, and it is going to take both of you to make the journey.
The joy of married life is in the journey. Happy Trails!!!!
